In the mid to late 1980s Steven Brines joined this
club. He was an attorney practicing as a partner with Carl Hanson. As
a new member he took advantage of the club’s offer to attend the club’s
Board meeting. During his first such Board meeting the Board was
discussing the fact that the club’s Treasurer had resigned due to moving
out of town to go to a new job. As the Board discussed what they were
going to do and who could serve as Treasurer, Steven said, “I know I am
a new member, and I don’t know what requirements you have to be
Treasurer, but I am willing to serve if you want me to.” He had only
been in the club about 2 or 3 months at this time. The club took him up
on his offer and he took over as Treasurer immediately.
During
the time that he served he did a very good job. He attended the
meetings practically every week, attended the Interclub Council
Meetings, and also went to Division and District training. He worked
very closely with the Board and especially the Club Secretary.
Unfortunately Steven died very unexpectedly, probably, within 2 years of
joining the club. As a result of his dedication to Kiwanis and this
club, and as a result of his willingness to volunteer to help out the
club even though he was a very new Kiwanian, the club decided to give an
award in his name. The Steven F. Brines award is given to a new
Kiwanian who, within the first year of joining, has exhibited the same
traits as Steven did so many years ago.
